Data science is a new research area that has emerged from several existing fields, with the development of common principles among them for handling data in large quantities. The figure below shows the existing research areas that form the basis for the new field of data science. The Technion’s Faculty of Industrial Engineering and Management is conducting world-leading research in all these areas, including information retrieval and search engines, natural language processing, and more.
The demand for data and information engineers is constantly on the rise. A 2020 survey by QuantHub found that in 2019, there was a growth of 37% in the number of jobs on offer, alongside a 14% rise in salaries, and a rise of 67% in the number of companies expanding their teams of data scientists. The profession now ranks as the third most in-demand profession in the United States.
The Technion Master’s Program in Data Science and Engineering provides a strong science and engineering education for students with high-level analytical capabilities and with a relevant engineering, programming, or mathematical background.
The goal of the program is to give students in-depth training in developing engineering solutions and using existing tools in the field of data and information engineering in order to collect, manage, analyze, and present huge quantities of diverse data, which change frequently and have variable levels of certainty, spanning a range of knowledge areas and practical applications. The program equips students with advanced capabilities in working with big data, and gives them an in-depth understanding of the tools and methodologies available for working with data and information. In particular, it enables students to gain practical experience of working with different types data from among the range of specializations at the Technion, which include textual data, transportation and smart-city data, financial data, biological data, and more.
The program of study focuses on a combination of theory and practice; in particular, throughout their studies students gain regular practical experience of working with large databases.
Graduates of the program are awarded a Master of Engineering (ME) degree in data science and engineering.
