We are pleased to announce that after several years of follow-up, the Council for Higher Education has granted the Technion a permanent certification to award a degree in Data Science and Engineering. As in many other cases, the Technion is the first in the country to receive this certification!
Six years ago we started developing the undergraduate curriculum in Data Science and Engineering – a pioneering program in Israel and in all likelihood in the entire world (certainly among the leading universities). The program aims to train graduates to work with Big Data throughout its entire life cycle, from collecting, managing and analyzing data to presenting conclusions to the end user. Such training requires rigorous mathematical and computational skills with tools for understanding and analyzing data regardless if the data is textual data, sensory data, images, video or voice.
We presented the ambitious program to the Council for Higher Education and with their support we began training students five years ago, who are today our first graduates.
Our graduates have work in industry in leading companies and small startups, have enlisted into the army as part of the Academic Reserve, and some continue their research in academia as part of a master’s degree – and even a direct doctorate!
We are proud to have successfully met the challenge, and the Data Science and Engineering degree is today one of the most sought-after programs on campus, with both a “Civilian” and Military (Alonim) Excellence Program.
Looking into the future, we will continue to improve the program, exploring new ways to train our students preparing them for the challenges and impact Data Science is making on our world. We wish success to our fellow universities in Israel and around the world that have followed in our footsteps and have opened Undergraduate Data Science degrees.
